Wisconsin Engineer Magazine (Website)

We are the oldest student-run publication, dating back to 1896. We currently publish print issues of the magazine every semester along with exclusive online content between semesters. All of our work across all five of our departments (Writing, Photography, Graphic Design, Web, and Public Relations) is completed original and done by students at UW-Madison, primarily in the College of Engineering.

Requested Financial Support

The cost to run our magazine is not quite offset by our ad revenue, by about $1000 each semester. Any opportunity to decrease this margin is helpful for us. We are also able to close this gap through added subscriptions to our magazine, which costs $20/year for both issues to be delivered to your door.

Other Requested Support

We would love to write articles about life as UW-Madison College of Engineering alums in the workforce. This would involve interviewing several former UW-Madison students a given company, taking photos, and putting together an article for print. We hope that these types of articles would help to advertise companies to students at UW-Madison and the hundreds of high schools across Wisconsin that receive our magazine each year.

Steel Bridge (Website)

The annual National Student Steel Bridge Competition challenges engineering students to design, fabricate, and construct a functional and efficient 1:10 scale bridge. Last year, around 200 teams participated from around the country, with 41 of those teams qualifying for the NSSBC. Bridges are scored in structural efficiency and construction economy. Structural efficiency considers the deflection of the bridge under a predetermined load compared to the weight of the bridge. Construction economy is scored based on the time to construct the bridge and the number of builders used. These two scores are put together to determine overall rankings. This year the challenge revolves around constructing a bridge for a frisbee golf course. The bridge should be designed to avoid interference with frisbee paths and act as a pedestrian path over a river. This competition will challenge the team to adapt and apply our engineering knowledge in order to produce new and innovative ideas. We are looking to improve on our results of last year and increase our membership.
